GoForum problem Can't Post

Keep getting this error - INI_Load : The ini file '//goforum.config.cgi' could not be found! Any ideas? All paths seem to be fine and the goforum.config.cgi file is in my exec folder.

Hi Ginslinger,

Thanks for posting

That seems like it should be working. What I would do is try uploading everything again, set the permissions and the options in the goforum.config.cgi.

If that doens't work, you can send in an email and I will take a look at it Smile

I finally paid to have this setup correctly by a programmer. What version of PHPBB are you using as I am still using 2.0.4 and I guess that was part of the problem. Still haven't gone live with the site yet but it seems to be working ok. I do need to find out exactly what the problem was as I do need to upgrade the boards to the latest version sometime soon.

So that means setup instructions in the "readme.txt" file are not correct and we need someone else to install???

I am using version 2.06 of phpBB.

I am still using 2.0.4 but will need to upgrade in the near future. I am becoming a person who figures if it's not broke don't fix it. However the new 2.2 PHPBB if and when it gets done will require the upgrades so I will have to do it sometime.

Yeah, I am waiting on 2.2 as well. Thats why I don't have that many mods installed when i upgraded from 2.04 to 06 it washed away like 15-20 mods!

I really need some help with this goforum thingy... is it purposely not suppose to work when installed by user?

Re: [DefenceTalk.com] GoForum problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there!

Thanks for your post. :)

In Ginslinger's case, he had an unsuual problem that made it difficult to install himself. I believe our programmer had to make a slight modification to GoForum for it to work on his system. This isn't normal -- most of the time, there's no problem in getting it to run. However, with the sheer number of forums supported as well as the different web server configurations that everyone has, it's possible to require some extra assistance.

As GoForum is a free add-on product provided as-is, it's not supported under our usual support -- so, if you need us to install it, that will end up costing a bit extra.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. :)

Well, I followed the "readme.txt" that comes with the download... still doesn't work.

Issue:

Is there any way to have user LOGIN and then create the thread with that users name??? Currently, anyone can click "discuss this story" and it creates the thread... that is no good for couple of reason!!! Flooding anyone??? Shocked

Hi there!

Since the point of the "discuss this story" link is to automatically create the forum so that you can discuss it, the functionality you ask for is outside the scope of that.

However, you don't have to worry about flooding -- once the forum is created, it won't be "re-created". Any additional users to go to that forum will already see it created and can add their comments, rather than creating multiple copies of the same post.

I hope this helps! :)

Re: [Donna] GoForum problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this was overlooked...

lets say you have some nuttcase who is out to cause harm to your website... and your website consists of many categories each cat having adding 10-20 articles daily.

I know once you create a thread for particular article... the script would not alow user to open another one BUT whatif that nutt case clicks "discuss this story" under ALL of the articles you have published? Obviously, it would create a thread when it sees there is nothing created... that means technically your forum fills up with "discussion: article title" from A to Z. :)

It should something like this:

Instead of adding one user name and password into that goforum.config.cgi... it should see if user is logged in, if yes itshould create the thread under that users name. If not, it should direct the user to the login page and then redirect and automatically create the thread. I know this means a lot of work for the programmers but takes care of the flooding and some other concerns that webmasters may have. ;)

Re: [DefenceTalk.com] GoForum problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there,

I'd recommend setting up goforum to create threads under a separate forum category so that article discussion topics don't clutter up your site. This advice is applicable whether or not someone is maliciously creating topics.

Of all the things a malicious user could do, creating empty forum threads is probably very minor.

The suggestion to use users accounts if they're already logged in is interesting and feasable, so I'll certainly add it to the requested features list. However, I'm not sure how many users would actually *want* that sort of functionality -- I think if I were to click on a link like that and suddenly find that I had created a thread that I was only interested in reading, not commenting on, I'd be a little miffed. :)

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. :)
