Comments Script Can't Post
I ran across a comments script (attached) that works great with Article Manager. It even comes with a simple password protected admin script to delete comments.

A few small details, though:

1. It requires that your pages be .php
2. You have to be sure to put the absolute path to the comment.php file in your article/default.html file.
3. You have to be sure to put the absolute path in the comment.php file for the comment.dat file.

I'd be willing to offer simple support to those who want it.

Really, you don't. They're two different extensions that allow for different types of code to be used. However, if you're asking how you can make Article Manager publish in .php instead of .shtml... here's how. :)

First, you'll need to replace all of your SSI's with PHP includes. We do have a set of PHP based templates, but if you've already modified your templates, you'll need to go through and do this by hand. So, the includes will look more like this:

<?php include('$publishdir_filepath$$file_categories$'); ?>

...replacing the $file_categories$ with the appropriate placeholder, of course.

Then, go into Article Manager and choose Setup Options. Under "Server" scroll down to the Publish Settings and you'll see a section called "Publish file extension". Change this to php.

Now, hit save, republish your files, and voila. :)

Hi brianbankerus,

Thanks for posting.

Since this script is in PHP, you will need to change you default file extension to PHP if you wanted to use that code.

To do that, just follow the instructions in Donna's post above, and you shouldn't have any troubles Smile

Wouldn't it be great if Interactive Tools added this feature to AM? HINT! I don't want to change my pages to PHP, no chance. Not when spiders are looking for static web pages to index. Thanks for posting!

A commenting system built right into Article Manager is something that has already been request several times so the developers definitely know about it. What I am going to do is add your name to the list of people that have requested it. This way, when the next version of Article Manager is being developed, there will be an idea of how much demand each feature has.

As for when the next version is coming out, I am not too sure at this point. I know the developers are working as hard as they can on the MySQL version of Article Manager though Wink.

In the meantime, you should still be able to switch over to PHP extensions as they are still going to be static files. All of Article Manager’s pages are static regardless of their file extension Cool.

This script can be adjusted in the .htaccess file to allow parsing of .shtml .html or any page extension you want. :)

We use the "my little comments script" on our five Article Manager sites. I have just noticed, when using the comments script administration feature, a lot of weird postings. I would normally expect to see the article number in the pull-down menu, but instead there are a lot (dozens?) of fake e-mail addresses, using our domain. For example, abcd@guernseycattle.com.

I'm not an expert at these things, but it almost seems like someone is trying (successfully?) to use the comments script add-on to send spam. I have deleted most of these, but it's a time-consuming activity because there doesn't seem to be any sort of bulk delete feature.

I notice that the website at the beginning of this thread, 68 Caliber, appears to not have the comment script installed. I was wondering if they installed it, and then removed it for some reason?

I've e-mailed Michael about the GoForum solution, and await his response.

Another problem we find with the "my little comments script" is that visitors use it to post questions. For example, on the English Guernsey Cattle Society site (www.guernseycattle.com) there's a page with a listing of all of the current Council members. Visitors have posted questions there about cattle, but we haven't been regularly looking at this page to hunt for comment/questions. So the visitors aren't getting quick replies.

Perhaps the GoForum solution would be better, in that it's easier to review the forum for new postings.

Is there a way to export the comments from the "my little comments script" over to our forum? Or must this be done in a manual, cut-and-paste fashion?

Any suggestions, comments, thoughts, recommendations, etc., would be most appreciated.

I got a question. Do you know if there is a way to apply css to the script? I don't want the default blue color for the "2 comments" link and the links on the actual comment page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to use it for http://dj-designs.com/v21/ but I really can't if I can't change the link properties *sniffle*

Ross, please add my name to that list requesting to see a comments feature added to Article Manager. It would be very useful. Holding off implementing any type of commenting script on my site until I see whether its a feature in the next release. Certainly hope so. :)

Thanks for posting. I'll add your name to the list of users who are looking for a comments script. We really do track suggestions, but with each new release all suggestions are reviewed and we try to determine what is most asked for and what would be most useful to the broadest number of users.

From what I've seen, the next version isn't going to be including a comments script so you may still want to look into an alternative.

Yes, please, a comments script that CAN NOT BE SPAMMED!

I set up a comments script and the cgi ended up being called by bots to add in spam.

We removed it because too many people were using it to bash each other in the comments and we got tired of moderating them.

I don't know much about Guernsey cattle but I love your site. It's a really useful example of how good an AM site can be.

I see you've dropped the comments script in favour of the bulletin board link. It's a shame people abuse the copmments capability because that was exactly what I was planning on a site. Back to the drawing board!

Before we installed AM on the Guernsey website it was a boring site, months out-of-date. The gentleman at the Guernsey society is great at writing things, but he'd need to send them off to a volunteer webmaster, and she'd post them when she had the time. Could be the next day, or it could take a few months.

Now, with AM, he can post the articles himself. And after a bit of trial and error he's even figured out how to re-size images and add them to the articles.

He has one of those cellular telephone modems in his laptop, and he can update show results from the showground itself. It means folks from other competing breeds (Holsteins, Jerseys, etc.) look on the Guernsey website for the show results.

The comments script was fantastic, and it really encouraged folks to add comments. Far, far fewer people add comments with the new bulletin board link. But with the comments script we needed to look at each article each day to see what had been posted. And we were spending a lot of time scraping out the multiple postings about Viagra, online betting, etc.

If someone can do a comments script that also enables simple moderation of the comments that would be fantastic. Sign me up!
