Article Manager Mod - Comments and Ratings? Can't Post
I would like to add viewer comments and a 5 star rating system to Article Manager. Has anyone done this or could make such a MOD?

Also, has anyone created a membership application that ties into Article Manager?

One suggestion you may want to try so site visitors can post their comments is to use a bulletin board script. You could create a unique forum for every article you create and then provide a link to the forum at the bottom of the article.

Site visitors could then post their comments and read other peoples comments.

What I'm guessing you're trying to do is create a simple way for site visitors to sign up for a user account so they can submit their own articles. Let me know if this is what you're trying to do and I'll post my suggestions.

I thought about using a Fourm in fact I have a licensed copy of vBulletin which would work with an application called PhotoPost from www.techimo.com. They actually have features that lend themselves to posting pictures and comments, although the rating MOD has not been fully implemented yet.

The idea is to have a subscriber base that would be allowed to access as "writers" to the Admin area.

I thought about restricting comments and ratings as well, but I believe that a more open system would envolve a greater amount of participants.

Here's a suggestion.

If you want to give your subscribers the ability to submit articles that wouldn't go live (that you could later approve) what you could do is create a single 'writer' that would be used by all subscribers.

Subscribers could then log in with this account and create articles.

This is an excellent idea, and I believe it would make article manager even more desirable... :)

The BBC site is a wonderful example of how simple and useful this feature would be and I would love to use that as a model.

I would like a choice of whether each article would allow comments or not and an admin approval feature would probably be necessary making user logins or forum integration not nescessary.

A rating feature such as stars would be great - I would also love a thumbs up and thumbs down for each article with an overall thumbs up or thumbs down. eg

or even better a choice of stars or thumbs for each article.

If this was something that Interactive tools did and supported I would be prepared to pay extra as an upgrade or add on.

I have just got to poke my nose in too... I think the rate this article or leave a comment about this article feature would be an absolute diamond...

Amazon do it I think... Sort of like a personal review...

I'll have to tell you ... I've been round and round with this one... I have a site buring to go but still looking for these features. So far this is the 90% best solution. Just needs the other 10%.

I do think its a winner and could really break this application from the news manager pack. I'm certainly willing to vote with my $$$s.

One other thing... a yahoo type indexing feature would be a nice option to have with this... as the news posts could get way out of hand and a proper indexing feature would be needed.

Wow! A lot of interest in the idea of a Mod for Article Manager to allow visitors to post comments and ratings. I agree with TipKing that it would definitely need to have the option to allow an editor to approve and if necessary edit the visitor postings before they go live.

The site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/talking_point mentioned by simonlilly is a good example. Visitors can click and read stories, then click a link to go to a form to send their comments. Quite nicely done. It looks like they could have used a simple email form for the visitor submissions and manually added comments to the articles. The yellow boxes with excerpts must have been manually added somehow.

I'm thinking that an interesting idea would be to customize the article detail template (templates/article/default.html) to include at the end of the article page a Mail Form for visitors to enter their name, email, comments, ratings, etc for that particular article. The form could also include some hidden fields such as the article's title and category. These comments then could be emailed to the editor who could then choose whether to approve and add them to the existing article. I have had a fiddle and yes it is a great way of doing it. I had this vision of a more automatic way of doing it but this is really great.... Lets me approve the comment and decide whether or not to include

I can route the form through my mailing database (Picking the email address up on the way Wink) And using the hidden code

It is just one click to get to the relevant article to add the comment or rating.....

If I ever get my site finished I will show you it in action

Hi

I have set up comments as suggested, and I am using one of the spare fields to store the comments. This is all working fine but I would like to make a request for a hack or feature in the next upgrade.

At the moment all the comments are stored in a 'text field', ie one long line of text. As the number of comments increases this will become harder to manage. Is it possible to have the option of a text box for a spare field, along with the text field and drop down menu?

Hi Thomas,

Sorry for missing your post. With the latest version of Article Manager you are able to make any of the spare fields into either a textfield, text area, dropdown list, checkbox or a WYSIWYG field. This should make it a lot easier to add article comments.
